Surround yourself with people who are better than you.

Last week was the 2019 Brit Awards, one of my favourite artists, Pink closed the show with an outstanding performance.

At the Brits, Pink quoted ' in order to be successful you need to surround yourself with people who are better than you'. I love this motto and it can be applied to all aspects of your life. As I have got older I have found this to be true....the more you surround yourself with positive, supportive and knowledgeable people the better you become and it tends to bring the best out in you.

How many times have you been surrounded by energy drainers, or people who try knock you off track when it comes to achieving your goals?

This can be true when it comes to health and fitness, people offering you extra cake when you are trying to be good, people fighting for your time when you want to train, people who are jealous of your motivation, all things which can have a negative effect on your success.

Now I am not saying that we can be surrounded by positive , supportive people 100% of the time. I know it is hard to be positive 100% of the time. There are days when I feel tired and can't be bothered, I want to press snooze and want to skip my work-out, or I want to sit and eat rubbish. There are also days I feel shattered and don't have the energy to teach bootcamp.

However, if I turned up as Miss 'can't be bothered' and not motivating then the experience for my customers would be a negative one. So I have a word with myself and put a smile on my face and give the best possible experience to my clients. I also get out of bed as I know it will make me feel better and I limit the amount of rubbish I eat (yes I have treats as I am human).

The great thing about group training, especially bootcamp is that you are surrounded with like minded people, people who turn up week in week out and have the motivation to do something. There will be times when one person is less motivated than someone else and vice versa, however, everyone supports each other and makes the experience better.

Principles of a Penguin

I called into the 'folks' the other day and my Dad had got me a present! Well doesn't everyone love a surprise present?

He had got me an ice scraper attached to a hand warmer in the form of a penguin......both a practical and thoughtful present as I love scraping ice off my windscreen ;) Only joking but I do however, love penguins! Anyone who knows me I am not really an animal lover, however, I have a thing for penguins. They are both cute and funny! Something that I like in humans too......

I also love the principles of a Penguin, they tend to find a mate and stick with them for life! This type of commitment is rare in most other breeds of animals, including humans.

Now when it comes to exercise, some people have the principles of a rabbit, try every new trend out there, are hit and miss when it comes to exercise......... and some are like Penguins!

They find a routine that works for them and stick to it, no matter how hard it sometimes gets, the results for health and fitness are worth it.

We live in a world of quick fixes and quick swaps if something doesn't work.....health & fitness requires, patience, dedication and commitment!

Because your worth it.......

The other week I went shopping with my friend as she wanted a new foundation, now I didn't need anything but said I would go with her as an excuse to catch up. As I sat and watched the beauty consultant match her with the perfect foundation, the easily led marketers dream (me) got sucked into the buy two items and get six items and a gift bag for FREE promotion!

So one contour stick and beauty boosting foundation later I left the shopping centre feeling good about my purchases!

The beauty industry is worth approximately £27 billion! Now I contribute to that on a regular basis, as I like to look after my skin (especially now I have hit 40!) I get sucked into buying things which promote younger looking skin, I like a regular facial, going to the hairdressers, having my nails done.....in fact the list can go on and I would say I do the minimum compared to some!

So compare this to the fitness industry, worth approximately £5 billion......a fraction of the beauty industries worth!
  • I wonder how many people buy a block of facials and don't use them compared to wasted gym/fitness memberships?
  • I wonder how many people stay at home when it is cold and dark instead of going to their nail appointment?
  • I wonder how many people don't think twice about spending over £40 for a 'miracle' face cream yet turn their nose up at paying £40.00 a month for a fitness membership?
Obesity costs the NHS about £9.7billion a year with a wider cost to society of approximately £27billion!!

Like I said I love a good pamper however, I also spend the majority of my time (and money) on staying fit & healthy. The best anti-ageing I have come across is plenty of exercise, fuelling the body correctly and drinking plenty......of water! I try to keep my face & body in sync when it comes to ageing.

There might be a time when you can't afford to buy those miracle creams, so the alternative (and better option) is to keep active and eat well!

When your body seems to be having a midlife meltdown!

Where did January go? I can't believe we are in February already!

So it's 7 weeks since I turned 40 (not sure where that time has gone!). The run up to my 40th was great, the couple of weeks after was fab, however, since New Year has hit, so has every ache, pain and injury going! In fact I got my first injury over the Christmas break when I wasn't training!! It is like my body has gone into a midlife meltdown!

Over the years I have been quite lucky and only picked up the odd injury or had slight niggles, however, more recently (since my non training injury lol) I have been in pain after running, last week was the worst and struggled to walk after a training session. So I have done the sensible thing and rested, had a sports massage and been advised to go to the Doctors to make sure there is no underlying issue.

So yesterday I finally got my Doctors appointment, which I felt a bit of a fraud because nearly a week had passed and I managed to lift my leg up without being in pain. The Doctor however, was impressed with my strength, flexibility and said that I had looked after myself and was good for my age.......if he had seen me trying to get in my car last week I am certain he wouldn't be saying the same thing!

It got me thinking though how much I take my fitness for granted. I have done it for so long now that it is part of my daily routine, it has become as much as a habit of cleaning my teeth! I also am surrounded by people who have adopted the same healthy routine over the year and are 'great for their age'. I see family, friends and customers adopt the same good habits.

I want to give a massive shout out to my customers, who come week after week to bootcamp, those who push, challenge & work themselves hard at every session. Now I can encourage, motivate and sometimes shout at them to do their best, however, it is down to the individual to get the most out of their training session.

There are times when we all go through phases of not feeling our best, we go through peaks and troughs in fitness, in motivation and in results. However being consistent is key.......we wouldn't stop brushing our teeth just because we had no motivation or are a year older!
